Why are you brushing?

Are you brushing off the food, or brushing off bacteria?

The current dogma is to brush after every meal to get the food off.

My diet-based approach to cavity prevention (which is based on the underlying biochemistry) is to simply eat foods that don't require brushing afterwards, and now all of a sudden, you don't have to brush after every meal. Here is my diet based . It is geared for kids, but it applies to adults as well.

For example, if you eat an apple, the sugars will be rinsed away within 20 minutes. Nothing is stuck to your tooth. You don't need to brush anything off. Just drink water.

If you eat cheese, there is nothing stuck. Not only that, but because it is low-carb, there is no acid attack by bacteria anyways.

If you eat... a cracker. You should brush right away, because that is a sticky, processed starch.
